Notes From a Recent Planning Session

Every few months we sit down with a notebook and map out which studios to visit, which makers to profile and which materials deserve a closer look. This planning session was different because we had to make some hard calls about what to leave out.

The main question was about timber furniture. We have been following a cabinetmaker in the Adelaide Hills whose joinery work deserves more attention, but we also wanted to cover a textile dyer in Fremantle who is experimenting with natural indigo. Both stories are strong, yet we only have room for one feature in the next issue. After a long discussion about reader interest and the balance of content, we decided to go with the textile piece and hold the cabinetmaker for the following edition.

Another point that came up was how we handle studio visits. Readers have told us they want more practical details: how to book a visit, what to expect, whether makers welcome questions about technique. We are going to add a short practical note at the end of each studio profile, covering exactly those details. It is a small change, but it should make the magazine more useful for people planning their own trips.

We also reviewed the directory of open studios. Several entries were outdated, with phone numbers that no longer work or opening hours that have changed. Updating that list takes time, but it is the kind of quiet work that keeps the publication reliable. We will be contacting every studio on the list over the next two weeks to confirm their details.

One idea we are still weighing is a regular column on caring for handmade goods. The first piece would cover leather care, specifically how to clean and condition a vegetable-tanned bag without stripping the finish. It is a practical topic that fits our remit, and it gives readers a reason to return to the site between studio features.

By the end of the session we had a clear list of priorities for the next three issues. The textile feature is locked in, the directory update is underway, and the leather care column is pencilled in for later in the year. None of this is glamorous work, but it is what keeps an independent publication honest.
